Bowed Metals is the final instalment in our Experiments Series of instruments for the free Kontakt Player. Featuring a handpicked collection of Vibraphones, Crotales, Cymbals and Waterphones, performed by virtuoso percussionist, Hugh Wilkinson. Hugh is one of London’s top session musicians, and has performed on scores for blockbusters such as Shazam, Ant Man, Downton Abbey and many more. Together with Hugh, we recorded a collection of delicate bowed textures, creating a unique library of percussion as you’ve never heard it before, which is perfect for ambient and cinematic scores.

Recording Bowed Metals is something we have had at the back of our minds since starting the Experiments series. We wanted to do a deep dive into the world of percussion and push it beyond it's limits. This has involved creating a collection of rare sounds, some of which have never been sampled before. We thought there was no better way to end the series than with an exploration of bowed percussion instruments, such as Vibraphone, Crotales, Waterphone and Cymbals.
To capture the rich and delicate tone of this variety of instruments, Hugh utilised a range of top end studio microphones, placed in close and mid positions to get an intimate and detailed sound. Inspired by modern experimental film scores that make use of traditional instruments in non traditional ways, we wanted to focus on one technique and the range of sounds that it can produce. Not only do these sounds work wonderfully for ethereal and delicate cinematic textures but they also provide captivating aleatoric effects that are perfect at bringing a raw and otherwordly sound to your scores.
