Recording the Contemporary Soloists series is something we have had at the back of our minds since starting Sonixinema. We see it as the culmination of everything we've learned throughout our sampling adventure, and it truly represents Sonixinema's ideals and taste. After being introduced to Max and hearing him play, we knew we had to get together in the studio to record the next in line for our Contemporary Soloist series, the violin.

To capture the rich and delicate tone of Max's 19th century violin, we decided to choose a dry scoring stage in the heart of London, to get that real up close and personal sound that we were looking for. Inspired by modern film composers such as Jed Kurzel, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Jóhann Jóhannsson, we wanted to capture not only a very particular tonal quality, but also some very specific articulations which we feel represent the musical landscape that is featured throughout many of our favourite film scores.

For the full version of the instrument, we captured a range of basic articulations such as Legato, Sustains, Spiccato, Pizzicato, Tremolo and Col Legno, however it is what we captured next which truly brings the library to life. In collaboration with Max, we curated a range of unique and inspiring articulations, some of which aren't featured in any other sample libraries. These include Arpeggio Crossings, Warped Sustains, Circular Bowing, Harmonic Falls, Harmonic Wavers, Harmonic Glissando and Seagull Screeches. Not only do these sounds work wonderfully as aleatoric effects but also can be used very musically and can be used to create fascinating and dark, soulful atmospheres which enrich scores and bring an amazingly raw and lifelike sound which is usually unachievable with samples.

Most Asked Technical Questions

If you have any technical queries before you buy, check out the list below to see if we've already answered your question!
Kontakt Player is a free sampler created by Native Instruments, which allows you to use certain sample libraries without the need for additional paid software. Kontakt (sometimes referred to as the FULL version of Kontakt) is a sampler which can be purchased from www.nativeinstruments.com. The vast majority of our libraries only run in the FULL version of Kontakt, and therefore you must check that you have the correct version of Kontakt in order to use our sample libraries. Please check the description of each individual product page to find out which version of Kontakt you will need.
NKS brings all your software instruments, effects, loops and samples, into one intuitive workflow – creating seamless integration between NI and other leading developers. It gives you streamlined browsing, consistent tagging, instant sound previews, pre-mapped parameters, Smart Play features, and more. Please note that currently our libraries are not supported by NKS, however we will be updating certain products to be NKS compatible in the near future.
All of our Kontakt based libraries contain samples that have been converted to NCW. This has been done primarily to protect the content within the library, making it more difficult for people to use the samples outside of Kontakt. Certain libraries created by us include a WAV pack which means you can work directly with audio within your DAW.
DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. Softwares such as Logic Pro X, Cubase, Nuendo, Pro Tools, Ableton and Reaper are DAWs. In theory, you do not need a DAW to use one of our products, you do however need the correct version of Kontakt. However, if you plan on creating music, we recommend using a DAW to allow you to record and sequence your MIDI for easy playback.
You may use your library on more than one machine, however it is illegal to share, distribute or upload all or part of our libraries in any form. Instruments authorised via Native Access will require you to sign in to you account and has set limitation to TWO computer authorisations. Please read our EULA for a full overview of the conditions.
